Aboriginal Education
Aboriginal Education
Parafield Gardens High School supports Aboriginal students from Years 7 to 12. Our Aboriginal Education team includes three Aboriginal Secondary Education Transition Officers (ASETOs), an Aboriginal Education Senior Leader and an Aboriginal Education Coordinator.
Celebrating Culture
Each year, we recognise and celebrate important events such as Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week. These events provide valuable opportunities to share Aboriginal histories, cultures and perspectives with the whole school community.
Community Partnerships
We work closely with external organisations to support students, families and staff, helping to remove barriers to education and promote successful outcomes. The Aboriginal Education Room is open each morning from 8:00am to 8:30am for families to meet with the Aboriginal Education team and discuss student learning, wellbeing or any concerns.
Parafield Gardens High School also works with organisations such as the Workabout Centre, which supports students to gain qualifications and employment, and The Wyatt Trust, which may provide financial assistance. Families experiencing difficulties are encouraged to contact a member of the Aboriginal Education team.
SAASTA
The South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) offers young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students engaging learning and personal development opportunities.
SAASTA is a key part of the Department for Education’s 10-year Aboriginal Education Strategy and aims to improve outcomes for Aboriginal students and families. The program builds on school-based learning by providing opportunities for personal growth, cultural connection and leadership.
SAASTA students are encouraged to aim high and set strong expectations for themselves and their peers, particularly in attendance, participation, achievement and behaviour.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10, 11 and 12 who are studying the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) can apply to join SAASTA.
Year 10 students can gain up to 20 SACE credits through Stage 1 Integrated Learning and Stage 1 Aboriginal Studies.
Year 11 and 12 students can gain a maximum of 20 SACE credits studying Stage 2 Integrated Learning, Stage 2 Health and Wellbeing or Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies, which are offered on a rotating cycle.
** Please note that students can only undertake one Stage 2 Integrated Learning subject towards an ATAR pattern. It is important to check Year 12 subject patterns to ensure there are no preculsions towards achieving an ATAR.

Description
Year 11 and 12 South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) provides Aboriginal high school students with a unique sporting and educational program. Our academies work with school leaders and local communities all across South Australia. We give students the skills, opportunities and confidence to dream, believe and achieve in the areas of sport, education, employment, healthy living and connection with their culture. Students must meet a set of standards in line with the school’s values to be eligible for the program.
This includes a minimum 80% attendance rate, engagement in their learning, a high standard of teamwork, and a high standard of respect to staff, students, coaches and visitors. In Year 11 and 12 students will undertake Stage 2 Integrated Learning, Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies or Stage 2 Health and Wellbeing over both semesters (20 Stage 2 credits total). They will also participate in the SANTOS Aboriginal Power Cup and SAASTA Shield.

Description
In Stage Two Creative Arts Performance, you will explore your creativity by working on projects on your chosen instrument. You will learn how to plan and create your own original work, while experimenting with new ideas and skills. You will also research and analyse other artists or creative works to inspire your projects and help you understand different styles and techniques.
Assessment:
AT1: Folio and Product 50% – You will show your planning, skill development, practice and rehearsal sessions, experimentation, and reflections as you work through your creative process. You will perform solo or ensemble work and work towards performing for an audience.
AT2: Investigation 20% – Part A: You will investigate an instructor or teacher from your chosen instrument. Part B: you will review a live performance. After part A and B you will finish with a conclusion. Your investigation can be presented in multimodal or written form.
AT3: Practical Skills folio 30% (externally assessed) – You will document your research, experiments, skill development, and reflections as you develop your practical skills in your chosen instrument.

Description
Stage 2 Drama focuses on developing students’ skills in performance, production, analysis, and evaluation of drama. The subject encourages students to use dramatic processes and conventions to explore themes, develop original or scripted work, and to reflect on their own and others’ creative practice. A major drama production is developed and performed to an audience in the school theater.
ASSESSMENT:
AT 1: Group Production 40% – Students plan, rehearse, and perform in a group production, which can be a scripted, adapted, or devised work. Roles may include acting, direction, or technical/production design. Assesses collaboration, creativity, and application of dramatic skills.
AT 2: Folio 30% – Students complete a folio comprising documentation, reflection, and analysis of their creative process. Includes preparation, development, and evaluation of their own performances. May also include a response to live theatre or researched dramatic concepts.
AT 3: Analysis and Evaluation 30%– externally assessed Students individually analyse and evaluate live or recorded professional drama. Focuses on the effectiveness of dramatic choices, impact on the audience, and application of dramatic theory and conventions.

Stage 2 Drama helps you develop creative problem solving skills, critical thinking and communication skills. They work independently and collaboratively developing self belief and self confidence.

Stage 2 Dance in SACE builds on your skills as a dancer, choreographer, and performer. You refine your technique, create more complex choreography, and perform with confidence and control. You explore how to communicate ideas and meaning through dance, analyse professional works, and reflect on your own creative process. You also develop independence, making informed and purposeful decisions in your work.
ASSESSMENT:
AT1: Performance Portfolio 40% – You will learn a series of dances from your teacher or other choreographers and present them to an audience.
AT2: Dance Contexts 30% – You will create your own choreography which will be filmed and you will analyse this.
AT3: Skills Development Portfolio 30% (externally assessed) – you will choose a set of dance skills to improve through research, planning and development.

AT1: Folio 40% – a folio of evidence to show your design process, includes your idea generation, development, refinement, process of your design and reflection on your ideas as they develop.
AT2: Practical 30% – You will work with a brief to create finished designs using the skills and ideas you have explored. This could be in graphic design, fashion, character, product design or architecture. You will write a short statement explaining your finished design and how it met your brief, describing your ideas and processes.
AT3: Visual Study 30% – You will research designers and/or design movements and analyse and experiment with different techniques or styles related to your chosen topic, showing your learning in practical and written form.

Industry Connections provides an opportunity to students who have an interest in a particular industry area to develop and apply their skills, knowledge and understandings about that industry, while developing their capabilities and employability skills through an industry-related project.
Students undertaking Industry Connections select an industry and/or skills development context upon which to focus their learning. Together, students and teachers co-design authentic learning and skills developmental activities based on the students’ selected industry and/or skills training context. These activities allow students opportunities to develop and/or refine their skills to explore and connect to industry and a career pathway.

Building on what is completed within Community Studies Stage 1, Community Studies A allows students to develop a contract of work and explores aspects of the community with a greater depth of content. It is the perfect opportunity for students with a passion or specific interests to enhance their understanding, learn new skills relevant to and meet people who share those interests. Students will focus on further developing their work readiness capabilities while simultaneously learning new community or beyond-school pathway specific skills.
By reflecting on their learning and their success in achieving their goals, students gain insights into how they can be active and responsible participants in their communities, and how they can make valuable contributions to them.

Essential Mathematics is intended for students planning to pursue a career in a range of trades or vocations, or wishing to continue to develop their general mathematics and numeracy understanding.
This subject offers senior secondary students the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. General Mathematics gives insight into how things operate. Students learn about the types of loans available and how to reduce interest, finding the best solution and combinations of variables to best suit the situation.
Students will show their learning through Skills and Applications Tasks, folios and an external examination worth 30% of the subject grade.

Students who take Mathematical Methods will go through extensive work with Calculus, discrete random variables, normal distributions and sampling. Mathematics is used by engineers and companies to critically analyse their vehicles’ performance to optimise efficiency. Students will investigate fuel economy relationships and the impact of driving at different speeds and how it relates to the world we live in now, supporting students in making strong choices in their life. Students will use their knowledge of differential calculus to explore this investigation.

Food in the Community provides students with knowledge and practical skill application to support them with life after school. Students have the opportunity to build skills around budgeting and finances, shopping and meal prepping and working towards a barista accreditation.
Benefits of Studying this Subject:
You will develop skills that will help you discover and prepare healthy meals and create barista level coffee and other hot drinks. The lessons have a large practical component, where you will be preparing food each week. The skills and knowledge you will learn is not only fun but useful!

Ice Factor provides students with the opportunity to challenge themselves by learning how to ice skate and join the Parafield Garden’s Kraken hockey team. Students will participate in an on-ice training session each week, and participate in tournaments against other schools each term. Students will set their own goals for growth around skills and sportsmanship and reflect on their individual growth.

You will engage in a challenging experience that will help you grow your resilience, fitness and individual growth. Whilst in the program you will build skills that will help you with many aspects of life including teamwork, determination and self-reflection. Participating in Ice Factor also gives you the opportunity to be involved in events such as meeting the Governor of South Australia, being connected to job opportunities and continuing to play ice hockey outside of school.
