Aboriginal Education
Aboriginal Education
Parafield Gardens High School supports Aboriginal students from Years 7 to 12. Our Aboriginal Education team includes three Aboriginal Secondary Education Transition Officers (ASETOs), an Aboriginal Education Senior Leader and an Aboriginal Education Coordinator.
Celebrating Culture
Each year, we recognise and celebrate important events such as Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week. These events provide valuable opportunities to share Aboriginal histories, cultures and perspectives with the whole school community.
Community Partnerships
We work closely with external organisations to support students, families and staff, helping to remove barriers to education and promote successful outcomes. The Aboriginal Education Room is open each morning from 8:00am to 8:30am for families to meet with the Aboriginal Education team and discuss student learning, wellbeing or any concerns.
Parafield Gardens High School also works with organisations such as the Workabout Centre, which supports students to gain qualifications and employment, and The Wyatt Trust, which may provide financial assistance. Families experiencing difficulties are encouraged to contact a member of the Aboriginal Education team.
SAASTA
The South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) offers young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students engaging learning and personal development opportunities.
SAASTA is a key part of the Department for Education’s 10-year Aboriginal Education Strategy and aims to improve outcomes for Aboriginal students and families. The program builds on school-based learning by providing opportunities for personal growth, cultural connection and leadership.
SAASTA students are encouraged to aim high and set strong expectations for themselves and their peers, particularly in attendance, participation, achievement and behaviour.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10, 11 and 12 who are studying the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) can apply to join SAASTA.
Year 10 students can gain up to 20 SACE credits through Stage 1 Integrated Learning and Stage 1 Aboriginal Studies.
Year 11 and 12 students can gain a maximum of 20 SACE credits studying Stage 2 Integrated Learning, Stage 2 Health and Wellbeing or Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies, which are offered on a rotating cycle.
** Please note that students can only undertake one Stage 2 Integrated Learning subject towards an ATAR pattern. It is important to check Year 12 subject patterns to ensure there are no preculsions towards achieving an ATAR.

Description
Year 10 South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) provides Aboriginal high school students with a unique sporting and educational program. Our academies work with school leaders and local communities all across South Australia.
We give students the skills, opportunities and confidence to dream, believe and achieve in the areas of sport, education, employment, healthy living and connection with their culture. Students must meet a set of standards in line with the school’s values to be eligible for the program.
This includes a minimum 80% attendance rate, engagement in their learning, a high standard of teamwork, and a high standard of respect to staff, students, coaches and visitors. In Year 10 students will undertake Stage 1 Integrated Learning and Stage 1 Aboriginal Studies with a focus on Community Engagement. Students will engage with the Workabout Centre to complete activities to assist in gaining employment and explore future pathways and careers to develop a plan before entering senior school.
They will also participate in the SANTOS Aboriginal Power Cup and SAASTA Shield.

Description
In Photography-Year Book Design you will have the opportunity to explore the creative and technical aspects of photography while developing practical skills in digital yearbook design. You will learn the fundamentals of camera operation, composition, and photo editing and engage in collaborative projects, working together to capture school events and create layouts for the annual yearbook. Emphasis is placed on storytelling through images, effective use of design software, and project management. By the end of the course, students will have contributed to a professionally presented yearbook and developed a digital portfolio showcasing their photographic and design work.

In Year 10 Music, you will build your understanding of music conventions and techniques, learning more about how music is created and performed. You will investigate and evaluate music from different styles and backgrounds, helping you appreciate a wide variety of musical genres. You will create, compose, and perform music, either on your own or with others, which will help you develop important collaboration skills. There is an expectation to take part in Music Night performances to share your progress and achievements.

Music helps learners develop self-confidence and self-expression as well as creative problem solving and collaboration skills. They develop resilience and persistence through practice and rehearsal.

In Year 10 Drama you will develop creative solutions to interpret and present performances, analyse dramatic performances by exploring the viewpoints of the actor, director, designer, and audience. You will work both independently and with others to refine your character development and portrayal, while considering different roles in drama, including performance and production. You will also take part in creating a major drama production, which is performed for an audience in the school theatre.
Benefits of Studying this Subject:
Performing and presenting for an audience develops confidence, communication skills, teamwork and personal identity. You must be willing to take an on stage or backstage role in performances.

Description
Dream It is a SACE Stage 1 course in Creative Arts. You will work as a team to choreograph a dance suitable for younger year levels to learn. You will develop leadership skills and be expected to be a good role model and mentor to younger students. You will be required to attend excursions to local primary schools where you will perform publically and teach the dance you choreographed to students.
Benefits of Studying this Subject:
You will develop your communication, teamwork and leadership skills in Dream It. Dream It is beneficial for further studies in SACE Dance.

In year 10 dance you will continue to develop your technical dance skills in hip-hop, jazz, and contemporary styles. You will create your own choreography as well as work in groups, and take part in school dance performances. You will also analyse and review the meaning behind different choreographies and performances.

The aim of this subject is for students to become confident creators who can communicate complex and creative ideas across a range of text types. Students will complete English Pathways over a full year. In Semester 1, they will be assessed against the South Australian Curriculum, and in Semester 2, they will be assessed against SACE requirements. Students must achieve a C grade or higher in both semesters of Year 10 English Pathways. By successfully completing Semester 2, students can achieve 10 literacy credits towards their SACE.
In Semester 1 of the following year, students will complete Industry Pathways, where they can gain the remaining 10 literacy credits.
Through English Pathways, students develop the skills needed for the workplace or a VET pathway.
They respond to a range of texts across personal, social, cultural, community, and workplace contexts, and learn to understand and interpret ideas and perspectives. Students also explore how language choices create meaning. These critical skills support effective communication and prepare students for future pathways.

Students may undertake this subject from year 7 through to Stage 2. At SACE level, the subject is called English as an Additional Language (EAL) and students must meet eligibility requirements to enrol.
In EALD lessons, students develop the skills to comprehend and analyse a wide range of texts. Students who are accepted into the Specialist soccer program will have access to specialist equipment and coaching. Year 10 Science builds on key concepts in Year 9 through an inquiry-based approach to learning with a focus on scientific literacy, critical and creative thinking skills and collaboration. Students will explore phenomena using a hands-on approach to investigate key concepts in Biology (Genetics and Natural Selection), Chemistry (Periodic Table and Chemical Reactions), Earth and Space Science (The Big Bang Theory and Global Systems) and Physical Science (Energy and Motion).
This course is designed for students who wish to pursue Stage 1 and Stage 2 science. Practical and Challenging Experiences (PACE) is designed to provide students with opportunities to harness and develop their personal and social skills through hands-on and experiential learning. The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework is used to understand and structure learning. Students will help prep meals with the Salvation Army, engage in a financial literacy course and plan an excursion of their own choosing. Assessment is not summative, rather learning is based on the Personal and Social Capability. Students are instead assessed on their personal development and achievement of personal goals throughout the year.
